How often should you change your appliances?

All products have an expiration date. That might not exactly apply for electrical appliances and goods, but there is still a recommended time period after which you should change them. There are a few reasons behind this. Old appliances can become faulty easily because of moisture build up or other reasons. A faulty appliance can cause fires. Secondly, it might be cheaper to replace your old appliance than to actually get it repaired. Here’s a list by Sparkies Electrical on how long appliances should last and how often you should replace them.

Lights

We know what you are thinking. “Why replace a bulb that hasn’t burned out?” You make a good point, but consider this: why take a risk? Electricians recommend replacing bulbs and light tubes within their expected lifetime, which is 2000-4000 hours for a halogen bulb and 10,000-60,000 hours for fluorescents.

Air Conditioners

Ten years is considered a standard life time for any type of air conditioner. After that, you might want to look into replacing it. Realistically, your warranty will be over long before that. As a result, you might be facing hefty repair costs that in the long run may not be worth it. And on top of that, air conditioners are for your comfort, so if they don’t perform up to scratch, it might be time to get a new one.

Water Heaters

Life expectancy of a water heater is around 8-12 years. It’s best to replace your water heater within that time period even if it doesn’t malfunction. Water heaters are especially touchy in this regard because of all the potential for danger while bathing in hot water from a faulty heater.

If you need to replace any of these appliances before their “due date”, the issue might not be the appliances themselves. If you feel like you need a fault finding session, do not hesitate to contact Sparkies Electrical- the electrician experts of the Gold Coast.
