Easy ways to conserve energy

Sparkies Electrical Contracting Service on the Gold Coast share some tips to help you conserve energy around the house. By taking a few simple measures, you will come to realise you can actually save lot of money!

Did you know that 40% of your energy bill will be comprised from appliances that are off but on standby? If you do not switch the appliances off at the power point or pull the plug out completely, the appliance will still be drawing power.

Add up the number of appliances or pieces of electrical equipment that are on standby power in your home over the year and you could save considerable $$$ by simply unplugging it from the power point.

Common appliances and electrical equipment that are left on at the power point include:

  • Kettles
  • Coffee machines
  • Toasters
  • Microwaves
  • Sewing machines
  • Refrigerators
  • TV’s
  • VCR’s
  • Playstations
  • Computers
  • Lamps

Although refrigerators cannot be switched off at the power point or unplugged when filled with food, you can still conserve energy by keeping the doors closed as much as possible. Be aware older refrigerators are not as energy efficient as newer refrigerators that are manufactured with energy efficient features.

Turn out lights when you leave a room. Leaving lights on in rooms that are unattended are simply wasting electricity and costing you money in the long run.

Where possible replace old light bulbs with energy efficient fluorescent or LED bulbs to reduce your energy consumption.

Insulate your ceiling space. Fans, air conditioners and heaters won’t need to be run as regularly as the insulation in your home will help to regulate temperatures.

Appropriate window dressings such as block out curtains and blinds can help to reduce cooling costs in summer by keeping out some of the summer heat. Opening curtains and blinds during the day in cooler months can allow the sun and warmth in. Keeping doors closed to rooms that aren’t being used when you have the heater or air conditioning on will also reduce your energy bills.

Wash clothes in cold water. Hot water uses energy to heat it so costs more money to use than cold water.

Where possible, dry clothes on the line. If you must use a clothes dryer, ensure you have the most energy efficient model possible, clean the lint filters after every load and don’t overload the dryer to ensure energy consumption is kept to a minimum.

So you can see, with the few simple steps Sparkies Electrical Contracting Service has shared, you really can conserve energy at home resulting in a reduction to your energy bills.
