Electrical safety at home

Although electricity is a modern necessity and readily available, it is extremely dangerous if not respected and used carefully. Simple precautions in electrical safety can be taken around the home to ensure yourself or a family member never receives an electric shock or the worst case scenario, electrocution leading to death.

3 safety steps can be taken in each area of your home to eliminate the dangers of electricity:

  • 1. Be aware of hazards
  • 2. Evaluate the risk
  • 3. Implement changes

Sparkies Electrical Contracting Services advises home owners on the Gold Coast and nationwide to move around each room of the home, to look for hazards, evaluate the potential risk and make changes to remove the danger to keep the family safe.

Kitchens

Don’t overload power points. No more than two appliances should be plugged into a double power point. Overloading the power point with too many plugs and or double adaptors can cause the power point to overheat and catch fire.

Ensure plugs are always pushed all the way in, leaving no gap for electricity to arc. Make sure power points are in good condition, not damaged or coming loose from the wall.
Ensure no cords or leads are causing a hazard across the kitchen floor.

Bathrooms

Water and electricity do not mix. Water conducts electricity so can easily cause electric shock and electrocution which can be fatal.

Never leave an appliance that is plugged into a power point on a sink or near the bath.
Never touch an appliance that is plugged into a power point with wet hands.
Never leave children unattended in the bathroom with an appliance plugged into the wall.

Bedrooms

Damaged electrical appliances, frayed cords or leads strewn across floors can be a dangerous hazard.
For damaged electrical appliances, have them tested by a licensed electrician or simply dispose of them to reduce the risk of electric shock or electrocution.
Electricians can replace faulty cords and plugs making the appliance safe to use as electricity can still travel through a damaged appliance even if it is not turned on at the appliance. If it is plugged into the power point, it can still be live with electricity making it potentially very dangerous.

If you find you have power points that are becoming overloaded, Sparkies Electrical Contracting Services have licensed electricians who can install extra power points in your home. For the sake of yourself and your family, it is better to be safe than sorry!
