With summer on its way, you may be looking to install an air conditioner in your home or office.
With two types of ACs available, namely the window type and split type, you may face a dilemma regarding the type of AC to buy. Here are some of differences that may help you decide:
The split type is exactly as its name suggests, it is split into two components: an indoor and outdoor unit. The window type, on the other hand, is composed of one unit. Technically the split type requires more space, as both units need to be placed separately. However, the advantage to this is that the outdoor unit can be installed far away from the room the indoor unit is placed in.
For ACs to work efficiently, the compressor unit must be placed in an area with proper ventilation. Since the window type consists of all units together, it needs to be installed in such a place that proper ventilation is available to the part of the AC that faces the outdoors. This is not necessary for split types as the compressor is in the outdoor unit, which can be installed far away from the indoor unit.
Installing window types entails creating a large opening in the wall to support the whole AC, whereas split types require only a 3” hole for the piping that connects the two units. This may be an advantage to those who live in rented apartments, as landlords may be more willing to allow drilling a small hole as opposed to a large one.
For a window AC, its size is determined by its capacity. Therefore they are available up to 2 ton capacity.
If the room chosen requires a capacity greater than 2 tons, multiple ACs can be installed. There is no limit on tonnage for a split AC as the capacity depends on the outdoor unit, which does not affect the room the AC is placed in.
Usually split ACs are more expensive than window ACs. But they tend to be more fuel efficient, especially with modern inverter technology, which is unavailable in window ACs.
