Storm Safety

Living in Queensland and particularly on the Gold Coast we see the usual storms roll out over the state particularly during the summer season but also periodically throughout the year. The severity of the storms can range from a mild thunderstorm to a catastrophic one that delivers damage to homes, buildings and can lead to injures and death.

Sparkies Electrical Contracting Services local electricians have come to the rescue many times over the years for our Gold Coast based customers who’ve suffered the aftermath of a storm, needing assistance with their electricals.

There are some important steps you can take to ensure your safety in a storm particularly with electricity. In preparation for oncoming storms we suggest you:

  • Know where your electrical switchboard is in case of emergency
  • Unplug any non-essential appliances
  • Unplug computers and other electronic equipment to protect from electrical surges
  • Turn off all unused power points
  • Where possible disconnect your air conditioning system
  • Where possible shut down your solar power system only using the shutdown procedures relevant to your system
  • Unplug and cover any outside electrical equipment like TV’s on alfresco areas
  • Don’t use a fixed line telephone line during a storm in case of electric shock
  • If flooding is also expected, move electrical appliances and equipment to higher ground

In the event of a storm that brings down power lines to your home or premises, keep well away from them. NEVER attempt to move fallen power lines, the result could be deadly. Contact Energex who will send emergency services to take care of any fallen power lines that are touching or surrounding your home. If you are in a vehicle that has fallen power lines around it, stay in the vehicle until help arrives.

If you are concerned about the electrical safety of your Gold Coast home or premises once the storm has passed, contact Sparkies Electrical Contracting Services and we will send a fully qualified and licenced electrician out as soon as possible.

We will inspect your electrical appliances and equipment and can also take care of any repairs to your switchboard, cabling or wiring as a result of the storm. Safety switches are now compulsory by law so if you don’t yet have one installed, we can install one for you as well in preparation for the next storm season.

By taking these simple measures, you can ensure your safety during the Gold Coast’s storm season. If you have any queries regarding storm safety, contact the friendly team at Sparkies Electrical Contracting Services today.
